Magnolia virginiana

Common name: Sweetbay Magnolia
Zones of hardiness: 5 to 9
Height & width: 10-20’ in northern U.S. and 60’ in the southern part of the country.
Leaves: 3-5”(8”) long. Spear-shaped, symmetrical and oblong; top is a vivid, light & fresh green, while the underside is paler and even silvery.
Origin: southeastern U.S.

Grows easily in acidic soils with full sun to partial shade. The wiry, tentacle-like and multi-pronged tree trunk comprised of smooth, grayish bark, creates a rounded crown, giving an overall graceful visual effect. White cup-shaped flowers bloom in May to June and carry a soft, lemony aroma.
